Description/content

The objective of the programme is to acquire fundamental professional knowledge and the ability to work independently in accordance with scientific methods, to master the varied demands of working life in applied practice, research or teaching, and to deal effectively with the frequently changing tasks that arise in the professional life of an engineer working in water management.

With the Master’s programme in Water Engineering, graduates acquire expertise in the fields of national and international water management planning processes, in drinking water supply and waste water disposal, hydrology, hydraulic engineering and experimental hydraulics, in restoration ecology and in biotechnology and river morphology, and also in flow and process modelling.

The Master’s programme is run by Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and includes an exchange semester at the University of La Coruña in Spain.

Enrolment for the winter semester: The first semester is taught at the University of La Coruña as an exchange semester and the second semester at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences.

Enrolment for the summer semester: The first semester is taught at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and the second semester at the University of La Coruña as an exchange semester.

Students of Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences can be supported via ERASMUS+ for the winter semester at University of A Coruña. The internship in the third semester can be supported via ERASMUS+ or PROMOS where appropriate. In addition, students who enrolled in the summer semester can apply for the Deutschlandstipendium.

Academic admission requirements
  • Good or excellent university degree
  • completed over a standard course duration of at least seven semesters or at least 210 credits
  • in the subjects of Water Management, Civil Engineering or a strongly related field

Applicants who cannot meet the requirement for 210 credits but who can provide evidence of at least 180 credits will be given the opportunity to obtain the missing 30 credits over one semester of a Bachelor‘s programme before the start of the Master‘s course.

Language requirements

Evidence of knowledge of the English language to level B2 of the Common European Framework (recommendations) must be provided in the form of:

  • IELTS exam - 5 or
  • Cambridge exam - First Certificate in English FCE (A-C) or
  • TOEIC - 541 or
  • TOEFL iBT - 87 (internet based) or
  • UNIcert II or
  • ALTE level - Level 3 or
  • equivalent tests

In cases of doubt, the Board of Examiners will decide whether sufficient evidence of English language skills has been demonstrated.

Applicants may be exempt from providing evidence of their English language skills if they were taught in a bilingual school (to at least the end of year 10), if they are native speakers, or if they can show evidence of a period of at least half a year spent at an English-speaking school, university or other institution.

Founded in 1991, the university has long gained a reputation for its well-rounded academic education programme and motivated student body. University location

With 1,200 years of rich and colourful history, Magdeburg is one of the oldest cities in the new Laender of the former East Germany. There are only few cities in Central Europe which compare to Magdeburg in terms of its eventful historical past.

The sights and attractions that can be found in Magdeburg reflect the eventful past and present of the metropolis on the river Elbe. Come and visit the capital city of the German State of Saxony-Anhalt for yourself and explore a fascinating location situated right at the heart of Germany.

Magdeburg Cathedral, which is dedicated to St. Maurice and St. Catherine, and the Art Museum in the Monastery of Our Lady are just two examples of some of the city’s most famous sights and attractions. We therefore strongly recommend that you pay these religious buildings a visit during your time in Magdeburg.

Magdeburg is not only home to a number of historical sights and landmarks, but also to a multitude of modern attractions such as the Magdeburg Waterway Junction, which boasts the world’s longest canal bridge, and the “Green Citadel of Magdeburg”, a building designed by the famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

You should also be sure to pay a visit to the old market square (Alter Markt), where you can view the “Magdeburg Horseman” statue, which is believed to depict Emperor Otto the First, and the Old Town Hall.
